The Most Common Luxury-Lighting Mistake
Why a ceiling full of recessed spots is the fastest way to make an expensive room feel cheap.
Walk into most newly built luxury homes in India and look up. You will very often see the same thing: a ceiling gridded with recessed downlights, evenly spaced, all switched together, all pointing straight down. It is the default a great deal of money buys, and it is, more often than not, a mistake.
Why too many downlights make a room worse
A downlight throws a cone of light straight at the floor. Fill a ceiling with them and you get flat, even brightness everywhere and emphasis nowhere, the exact quality of a supermarket or an office. Worse, light coming only from overhead casts hard shadows into the eye sockets and under the nose, which is why people and food both look better by lamplight than by downlight. A room can be perfectly bright and still feel clinical, and the culprit is almost always the downlight grid.
The instinct behind it is understandable. Downlights are discreet, and more of them feels safer than fewer. But lighting does not work like insurance. Past a point, each additional downlight flattens the room a little more.

What to do instead
Use downlights sparingly, for the jobs they actually do well: a wash of light where you need to move safely, or a tight accent aimed at a worktop or a painting. Then build the rest of the room from other layers. Light the walls, not just the floor, so the room feels larger and softer. Put warm light at table and eye height, from lamps and pendants and wall lights, where it flatters. Add a dimmer so the same room can be bright for a lunch and low for a dinner.
This is simply layered lighting applied with restraint. The best schemes we specify often use fewer fixtures than the builder's default, not more, because each one is doing a considered job. Fewer, better and warmer beats many, even and cold every time.
